After realising that they're the only same-sex couple at an open house, two women express their fears of standing out through song.
Whatever They Say is a 6-minute musical short, co-written by Alice and her writing partner Erica Belton, with music by Alice. It's produced by Christien Bart-Gittens, whose previous shorts screened and won at BAFTA-qualifying festivals and were distributed in the US and EU. It was directed by Erica, with cinematography by award-winning DoP James Stittle, and starring Jordan Stamatiadis (Stephen Sondheim's Old Friends, Coming to England) and Laura Delany (Cabaret, Hadestown).
The film was shot in Suffolk and started its festival run in 2023.
It's a joyful yet heartfelt take on the different shades of the modern LGBTQ+ experience: can queer people ever not stand out as such? Is standing out such a bad thing? The answer is obviously not an easy one...
